Ceramic Dental Applications

Ceramic Dental Crowns (Full Ceramic / All-Ceramic / Empress Crowns)

Ceramic dental crowns, also known as all-ceramic, full porcelain/ceramic, or Empress crowns, are preferred for supporting teeth that have lost structure and strength, filling gaps caused by various reasons, and repairing damage such as fractures or cracks.

Ceramic crowns offer excellent light transmission and allow for a wide range of shade and layering options. This enables results that are closest to natural teeth and highly aesthetic. Thanks to their superior color harmony, ceramic crowns are among the best solutions for addressing aesthetic concerns.

Ceramic dental crowns are most commonly used on front teeth. When front teeth require coverage for aesthetic or structural reasons, ceramic crowns are an ideal option. However, in cases of missing teeth, ceramic crowns may not be preferred because they do not have sufficient strength to function as a bridge. For the same reason, they are generally not recommended for posterior teeth, although advanced Empress/ceramic systems may be used on molars in selected cases.

Unlike zirconium crowns, ceramic crowns do not contain a supporting substructure. They are produced by strengthening porcelain as a single material. This reinforcement is achieved by layering glass ceramic onto porcelain under high pressure. Whether ceramic crowns can be used on molars depends on factors evaluated by the dentist, including the patient’s jaw structure, parafunctional habits, and chewing analysis.

Since ceramic crowns are bonded to teeth using mechanical and chemical adhesion methods, they may provide stronger results compared to metal-supported porcelain crowns.
